Lazareti Cultural Centre

Location: Frana Supila 2, just outside the Ploče Gate, eastern entry to the Old Town, Dubrovnik

Venue style: Multi-space cultural complex in a repurposed 17th-century quarantine building · contemporary arts and live events venue

History

The Lazareti was built in 1627 just outside the city walls as a mandatory plague quarantine station — merchants and their goods had to wait 30–40 days before entering Dubrovnik. The complex of nine stone buildings with connecting courtyards fell into disuse after the fall of the Republic of Ragusa and was repurposed in the 20th century as a cultural centre. Today it is Dubrovnik's principal venue for contemporary and experimental culture: alternative theatre, underground music, street food events, art installations and club nights. The Croatian organisation Lazareti manages the space as a non-commercial cultural hub, deliberately positioned outside the mainstream tourist circuit.
